When Homeowners Should Opt For Air Duct Cleaning Services

Many homeowners hear about air duct cleaning as a part of general maintenance for their central air conditioning units. The air ducts run throughout your home, and it makes sense that they might get dirty over the years, right? Wouldn’t that affect the indoor air quality? You can also imagine that if they need to be cleaned, it has to be done so properly. There are those times when air duct cleaning might be required, and then there are those times when the experts recommend that you leave it off your maintenance list.

Let’s talk about when it’s a good idea for homeowners to call an HVAC technician concerning the cleaning of air ducts. First of all, if you are going to do this for routine maintenance, it’s actually not recommended by most experts. Second, if you decide to do it anyway, the experts that do recommend it give different opinions as to how often it should be done. I have seen it recommended annually, but more times than that, I’ve seen it recommended as a project that should be done every few years or even every five years.

In other words, it’s not necessarily something you’re going to want to opt for when it comes to annual maintenance. Yet there are extenuating circumstances that can call for air duct cleaning. For example, let’s say that you have excessive mold growth in the air ducts. They are going to need to be cleaned for sure. However, you want to be able to know that you can trust the HVAC technician in terms of showing you the proof that you have excessive mold growth.

Another situation in which you might need to have those air ducts cleaned is if there really is an excessive amount of dirt and debris up there in the ducts. There are times when people have a rodent or insect infestation problem, too, and those situations would call for air duct cleaning as well. Those are pretty much the only three situations that are going to call for air duct cleaning to fix a problem vs doing it for general maintenance.

As you can well imagine, those three problems suggest that more than cleaning is going to be required. You can’t eliminate mold, dirt and debris or rodents without addressing the underlying causes. Otherwise, you’re going to see those problems coming back, and the cleaning will have been for nothing. So the causes have to be addressed first, the situation assessed and then the air ducts cleaned.

You hope that you don’t run into a problem like this. If you do, then you certainly are going to have to call an HVAC technician to get a quote for air duct cleaning. As for general maintenance, it appears that the majority of the most notable experts on the subject suggest leaving those air ducts alone. Yet the decision is yours. You can always talk to an HVAC technician about your individual situation, and you want to be able to trust him or her about the findings.
